Zabala is a climbing plant with very strong vines that can be 1" in diameter. It has a rugged and gnarly look. Its leaves are perennial, glossy and dark green. It produces a sausage shaped fruit approximately 2 ½" long and 1" in diameter. Its pulpy fruit is yellowish green and very sweet. It is considered a delicacy in Chile and used to make ice creams. It can withstand brief exposure to temperatures down to 14°F. It is distributed geographically from Aconcagua to Chiloé provinces.
