The Cape gooseberry is a low lying bush with bright orange berries enclosed in a pale brown parchment-like
case, called the cape. The berry is the size of a cherry tomato, is very aromatic and full of tiny seeds.
They are delicious eaten straight from the cape or made into gooseberry jam. They can be added to salads,
desserts and cooked dishes.

The plant is similar to a dandelion. The leaves have a pleasant agreeable flavor with a
slight sweetness and very little fiber. It makes a very acceptable lettuce substitute and can be used

periods of summer drought, it greens up with the first autumn rains. Clumps of fine leaves provides large

of biomass that greatly improve the quality of the top soil. It spreads also through rhyzomes. Ideal as a ground cover
for orchards or vineyards.
