Apricots originated primarily in the area known today as the Great Wall of China and
secondarily along
the slopes and river valleys of the Tien-Shan mountains in southeastern Kazakhstan where they intermingle with the
large stands of apple trees. The only apricot species that
is native to Europe is the Briançon apricot (Prunus brigantina) which occurs in the Haute Alpes in France
by the Italian border.
Best results can be achieved when apricots are grown in areas with relatively dry spring conditions. Apricot trees
bloom early in the spring and should be protected against late frosts.
Luscious apricots are unbeatable eaten fresh with their superb flavor and texture. This versatile fruit is also
delicious when dried, canned in halves or made into preserves such as jam, jellies or syrups. |
